5 Key Lessons from a CEO's Journey

November 05, 20242 min read

Building a successful company involves more than just hard work. It’s about learning from both successes and mistakes. Here are five key lessons that have shaped my journey as a CEO.

1. Energizing Choices

I learned to cut out clients and tasks that drained my energy, even if they were profitable. This shift helped me protect my vitality, enabling better decisions and fostering a healthier, more productive work environment for long-term.

2. The Delayed Gratification Trap

Choosing delayed rewards meant I often didn't celebrate victories when they occurred. Over time, this dulled my drive and momentum. I realized the importance of immediate rewards and recognition to fuel passion and performance. Maintaining enthusiasm for my work is crucial to avoid decisions that drain my spirit.

3. Fixed Compensation Complacency

I thought keeping my salary static was wise. While it was a good number, it disconnected my rewards from my effort and success, leading to burnout. Your compensation should reflect your success to maintain motivation and alignment with company performance.

 4. Stick to Your Guns

Being careful about what I said yes to was a significant lesson. I often agreed to things just to please others or follow through on commitments. If it’s a bad idea, just say no. This simplicity helps maintain integrity and focus.

5. Manage Your Growth and Limit Overgrowth

I aimed for 40% year-on-year topline growth without considering its impact on the bottom line. This neglect led to a failure to build the necessary team depth and culture. We transitioned from a well-tuned $4.5 million company to a $13 million company barely held together with ZERO increase to net profitability. Being a badass CEO isn’t about flashy cars or motivational speeches; it’s about learning from mistakes and making uncomfortable strategic decisions.

These lessons remind me that success is not just about what you do right; it’s equally about avoiding the pitfalls along the way. Embrace these insights to foster a thriving company culture and sustainable growth.
